Herpes-type virus particles in tissue culture of Kaposi's sarcoma from different geographic regions.

چکیده
Typical herpes-type virus particles were observed in 5 of 8 selected tissue culture lines derived from different cases of Kaposi's sarcoma from 2 equatorial African regions, Congo and Uganda. Common and different traits of cellular morphology related to viral involvement were found. In one line, morphologic aspects and preliminary immunologic characterization suggested a virus resembling cytomegalovirus. The other 4 cases presented one important trait in common: The appearance of viruses (at an early stage in lines 13, 16, 19) in undifferentiated cells that resembled fibroblastoid or macrophage elements.-J Natl Cancer Inst 49: 1509-1526, 1972.

Background: In the Mediterranean region , Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has a high prevalence especially in patients with AIDS. Iran is located close to the Mediterranean region and the HIV prevalence is increasing in our country . In some stages, Kaposi's sarcoma is morphologically similar to other vascular tumors. Owing to the presence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) in all cases of Kaposi's sarcoma ,...
متن کاملKaposi's sarcoma associated herpes virus (KSHV/HHV 8): epidemiology, molecular biology and tissue distribution.
Introduction Although first described in 1872, Kaposi's sarcoma remains a neoplasm of uncertain histiogenesis.' The lesion is considered by some experts to be a vascular neoplasm and by others, a reactive vasoformative condition. Currently, the debate still rages over the precise cell of origin of Kaposi's sarcoma-that is, whether it is of lymphatic or true endothelial cell origin. Clinically, ...
متن کاملDetection of Human Herpes Virus 8 in Kaposi’s sarcoma tissues at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia
INTRODUCTION Human herpes virus-8, a γ2-herpes virus, is the aetiological agent of Kaposi sarcoma. Recently, Kaposi's sarcoma cases have increased in Zambia. However, the diagnosis of this disease is based on morphological appearance of affected tissues using histological techniques, and the association with its causative agent, Human Herpes virus 8 is not sought. This means poor prognosis for ...

A complication in the analysis of the role of ICP34.5 gene in the herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) lifecycle is the presence of overlapping antisense gene, open reading frame P (ORF P), which is also deleted in HSV-1 ICP34.5 negative mutants. A HSV-1 wild type strain (17+) ICP34.5/ORF P deletion mutant (1716) is totally avirulent in animal models and impaired in a number of in vitro function...

Background and Objectives: The molecular genetic of the human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) has now been characterized the pathogenesis of kaposi sarcoma (KS). This study attempted to determine the rate of HHU-8 infection in KS in an Iraniann cross sectional study. Method & material: In this cross-sectional study, we used paraffin-embedded specimens of 54 clinically well-characterized kaposi sarcom...
